An Invitation to Support the Suffolk University Poetry Project
As many of you know the Suffolk University Poetry Center was founded nearly eight years ago. Over those years we have offered a reading series that has brought many wonderful writers to our university community, many of those writers visiting classes and leading writing workshop discussions.
There have been stellar writers, winners of all the major awards, and there have been emerging writers too, eager for the chance to bring their work to a receptive audience. Our audience has also always included many folks from beyond the university, good citizens of what Saul Bellow called The Republic of Letters.
This past year I officially retired from full-time teaching, and am now an Emeritus Professor. But I have always thought that my retirement would be more or less the beginning of the next phase in my life’s work, not the finale.
Thus with the help and advice of my colleagues in the English Department and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Suffolk, Ken Greenberg, I’ve outlined some dimensions to The Suffolk University Poetry Project. We are going to use the occasion of my retirement into an Emeritus Professor as the first day of the expanded set of activities sponsored by the Poetry Project.
Here is a bullet-point glimpse of some of what we have in mind.
- An additional reading in our series, by an author of the highest standing
- A named traveling scholarship for a Suffolk undergraduate writer
- Short-term writing workshops devoted to specific themes and populations
- An ongoing focus on issues of war and peace-building
- Literary conferences, interdisciplinary symposia, special gatherings
- A translation festival
- Co-sponsored events with other literary organizations in the Boston area
- Establishing a “world-class” and digitized broadside collection
We'll go into details about these on the night of the event.
This letter is an invitation to you to join us in a celebration of my “retirement” and “day one” of the Project. It will be on Tuesday evening, May 13, 2014. The evening will be from 7-9 p.m., and consist of readings, remarks, and riffs (literally) by a number of the people I have worked with over the past thirty years. It will be held in Suffolk’s C. Walsh Theatre, 55 Temple Street, right behind the State House.
We are inviting you to contribute $25 as the price of a ticket to our event. As you can see in the Ticket Information section above, you are welcome to contribute more. Likewise if you are not able to come to the event on May 13, please do consider making a contribution to our future efforts. Remember, we’ve established a Facebook page where you can enter comments and give us a thumbs up.
Thanks for your time. Hope to see you on May 13, and hope that you too will be a vital part of our Poetry Project in the years to come.
Sincerely yours,
Fred Marchant
